GRE Vocabulary Tips

When you are preparing for the GRE one of the most important things you can do to increase your score is to learn vocabulary words that are likely to appear on the test. The GRE verbal section can be tricky, so you must be prepared to recognize difficult vocabulary words. Many of these words are not part of your daily lexicon and you may be unfamiliar with them. By taking time to learn and understand new words, you will be better prepared for the GRE.
There are some things that you can do to greatly increse your chances of knowing the vocabularyon the GRE. First, use a vocabulary building program that is both fun and interactive. Being motivated to study is difficult for many of us. By using a product that is both fun and easy to use, you will be more apt to use it. Learning vocabulary does not have to be a choir. There are programs available that are much more fun than sitting with a dictionary looking up and memorizing definitions.

The GRE tests your understanding of difficult words. Knowing how words are used in context is key to understanding how they frequently appear in a sentence. Use a study method that incorporates this tactic. If you just memorize from a dictionary you lose out on how GRE words are used in context.

Having a wide vocabulary not only prepares you for the GRE, but also gives you skills that you can yse in both your personal and professional life.

Rhyminders is a great GRE Vocabulary resource that can improve your score. It’s and fun and entertaining rhymes help you to learn how words are used in context and helps you to easily memorize their meaning.

Study Abroad Without Passing The Standardized Exams : GRE / TOEFL / GMAT

I have always wondered about the relevance of GRE/ GMAT / SAT/ IELTS. These exams have their own flaws and may be perceived as regressive patterns of testing the knowledge, aptitude and analytical abilities of a graduate student. I am in no which way an expert, scholar or authority who can strongly detest the usage of the aforementioned exams in selection criteria of students for a study abroad program. The bottom line is that these exams are bridges across global schools which facilitate the selection of deserving students.

In my honest opinion exams like GRE are a matter of hard work and luck; both the determinants sharing the credit of your success equally. However, at times you may have a bad day or may be you are ill while you appeared for the exams. The results obviously are skewed towards the lower percentiles.

Now a days some institutions have been realistic enough to understand that the undergraduate GPA, work experience and a good resume, compounded with a professional letter of intent (for the desired study program) actually decide the capability of a student rather than the scores of standardized exams like GRE. The list of programs which may help you earn a MBA degree without GRE/ GMAT is given below.

These institutions are in no which way associated with my profession or academic interests. As a matter of fact there are a growing number of students who have exceptional work experience and great academic record but unfortunately were not able to perform on the standardized exams. Admittedly we are witnessing a boom in the number of students participating in study abroad programs and responding to this boom a great number of schools all over the world have relaxed the admission criterion. USA harbors these institutions which would give preference to your overall body of work rather than the scores on standardized exams.

The Difference Between TOEFL and GRE

Those looking to take classes in the U.S. who are from another country will have extra hurdles to cross in order to get accepted into the school of their choice. Extra testing is one of these. If you are looking to enroll in an education program in the United States, yet English is not your first language, you need to be aware of the basic exams you will be asked to take. These may include the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).

What the TOEFL Tests

The TOEFL test is designed to determine whether or not you can speak adequate English to enroll in the program. You will be asked to read, listen to, comprehend, and write in English on order to pass the test. This is the test that over 6,000 institutions in over 130 countries choose when determining whether or not an applicant can speak fluent English.

The first section of the test contains 50 listening comprehension questions. You will be asked to listen to a variety of spoken passages, such as a class lecture or a passage being read. It will be read as spoken by a North American English speaker. You will then answer questions on what you heard. The second part of the test is a 40 question structure and written expression section. This tests whether or not you can recognize the proper structure of written English. The reading comprehension section involves 50 questions based on non-technical, college-level reading material. Finally, you will be asked to write a passage on a given topic to judge your ability to write in English. Each of these sections is timed, so you will need to be fairly adept at reading and comprehending English.

Who Needs to Take This Test

The TOEFL is designed to test whether or not you can understand and use English as spoken in American on the college level. While you may be a great English speaker, attending classes requires a higher level of understanding and speaking ability than conversational English. Any non-native speakers who wish to attend an English-speaking college can take this test, and it may be required for entry. It is a good idea for those pursuing both undergraduate and graduate degrees, but some graduate schools will accept students who graduated from English-speaking programs for their undergrad degrees without the test results. The test results are valid for two years after the exam is first scored.

What the GRE Tests

According to the Educational Testing Service, which administers both the TOEFL and the GRE tests, the GRE is designed to test "verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, and analytical writing skills.” This can be subject specific or general, depending on the test chosen. The test is designed for students who are applying for graduate school programs. It is designed for native English speakers.

The test is unique in the fact that it is a computerized adaptive test. This means that the computer adjust the questions given to the test taker based on whether or not the previous question is answered correctly. This allows the test to give a score with fewer questions asked.

Who Needs to Take This Test

The GRE is required by many English-speaking colleges and universities that have graduate programs. It is used to help "level the playing field” for graduate school applicants, as it is designed to give an accurate, unbiased measure of an applicant’s ability level.

You may need to take this test and submit your scores if you plan to attend grad school, regardless of your English speaking ability. A minimum score may be required for your field of choice. Some programs only look at a certain portion of the test, such as the quantitative reasoning section for a math program, but you will need to take the entire test if your school requires these scores for entry into the graduate program.

GMAT VS GRE

What is the GMAT?

The GMAT or Graduate Management Admissions Test is for the most part a required part of the admissions process for full time business schools. The GMAT test is a standardized 3 part exam which helps admissions officers select the very best of applicants. It measures basic verbal, mathematical and analytical writing skills that an applicant is expected to have developed over the years of formal education and professional work experience.

What is the GRE?

The GRE (Graduate Record Exam) is part of the admissions process for graduate school programs. This is not business specific like the GMAT test and is used for all types of graduate programs. Some business schools are beginning to accept the GRE along with the GMAT but the number is very limited and the GMAT is to be considered the standard for business schools.

GMAT vs GRE:

The GMAT and GRE are very similar tests in that they both test analytical writing, math and verbal. The GMAT also tests Verbal-Critical Reasoning and Quantitative-Data Sufficiency which are not found on the GRE. The GRE contains problems on vocabulary and word relationships that the GMAT does not test on.

Overall business school applications are on the rise and your GMAT score has become that much more important. MBA programs are counter cyclical to the economy which means that as the economy falls individuals flock to MBA programs to further their education and provide a much needed boost to their resume.

The math or quantitative section of the GMAT is by far the most different and is often a challenge as most  applicants have been in the professional workplace for a few years and there advanced math skills have diminished. In order to regain there knowledge or learn for the first time students are searching for resources to help them score well on the math section. Study guides and classroom courses are common resources used when a student prepares for the GMAT.
